It's taken me the better part of a week to fully untangle the mess of my thoughts on this year's Beyond Wonderland. Though I certainly enjoyed attending my first Beyond — and being a part of the annual Insomniac event's third year in the Bay Area, a two-day whimsical festival that took place on Saturday, September 20th and Sunday, September 21st at the Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View — I'm still just not 100% sold that this particular trip down the rabbit hole lived up to the hype.
While clearly massive in the way only a sold-out electronic music fest can be, this particular attendee couldn't help but feel that the festival was laid out on a much smaller scale than the average Insomniac event, no doubt due largely in part to the actual amphitheater at Shoreline no longer being available for use. Event attendees are essentially paying for a parking lot production; and whatever the reasoning — whether this is because of city or venue regulations — and as someone who has attended events there where the amphitheater was in use, I found myself missing that part of the event experience more than anything.
However, I will say that Insomniac tops any other festival I've ever attended in terms of production levels, their aim notably being about the experience just as much as (if not more than) the music when it comes to their events. Netent casino bonus code. The plethora of decor dreamed up by Insomniac Events founder and CEO Pasquale Rotella was indeed incredible to behold, including as it does fantastical art installations, a gorgeous sea of bobbing globes of light in the trees, huge glow-in-the-dark mushrooms, and scantily-clad dancers, their faces painted with glittering makeup and massive white wings that floated magically, seemingly weightless, in the breeze.
Two of my particular favorites were the dazed caterpillar with hooded, sleepy eyes, a miniature version of its Queen's Domain mainstay, and technicolor octopus floating through the crowd, held up on stilts by workers and/or volunteers just as eager to catch headlining sets at the main stage as anyone else.
That's not to mention, of course, the colorful laser light shows exuding from a multitude of amply decorated stages, including one infamous Alice in Wonderland caterpillar sucking away on his hookah pipe, winking mechanical LED eyeballs at an equally tripped-out crowd.
If you love trance, the Queen's Domain main stage was the place for you on Friday; but if you're like me and are a bigger fan of the underground vibe, you probably found yourself gravitating toward the Boombox Art Car stage more than once throughout the weekend.
Personal Favorites:
For me, there were no better vibes than those exuding from the Boombox Art Car stage, Sunday's tech house lineup being stacked in a way that led me to believe that the majority of artists who played there will be seeing a lot more attention in the year to come.
Disclaimer: While I can definitely appreciate certain DJs purely due to their talent, despite the fact that they might be slapped with the 'mainstream' label, nothing made me appreciate the underground techno vibes of the Boombox Art Car stage more than all of that rather repetitive main stage EDM. In fact, gravitating back and forth between stages, from the Queen's Domain to Mad Hatter's, I found that hearing so much mainstream 'EDM' the entire weekend led me to find refuge at the relatively low-key art car stage when the aggression of the crowd at the bigger stages grew to be a bit too much.
This made catching the end of Destructo's set on Saturday, as well as grooving to Henry Krinkle and Moon Boots incomparably welcome relief from the amount of buildup-then-drop bangers played by most DJs at the Queen's Domain. Macjournal 6 1 2. The truth is that I'm a sucker for the smaller stage; I'll take an intimate vibe and room to dance any day.
That being said, 'mainstream' as they may be labeled now, Above & Beyond's closing set on Friday was entrancing and melodious to the ear as always, and enjoyable to experience despite the intensity of the crowd (and one precarious moment when the sound completely shut off during their set, to which they quickly switched it up with a whole new track — and with gusto). Though I did enjoy their set, I much preferred seeing Myon and Shane 54 and Cedric Gervais play on Day 2 at the smaller Mad Hatter's stage slightly tucked away behind the Queen's Domain.
Listen to Cedric Gervais' set:
Mat Zo held down the funk at the main stage with the second-to-last set on Day 1, throwing in remixes of some seriously old-school tunes to take us on a spacey trance journey, and tying together his more galactic tracks with electro house bangers geared to get the crowd going.
While I personally was unable to catch Oliver Heldens' set at Beyond (sadly), in an effort to relive the entire experience via listening to sets available for download on SoundCloud, I have come to the conclusion that his was undoubtedly one of the best of the entire festival. Enjoy:
Let's not forget a truly epic closing set by Kaskade, complete with seemingly never-ending fireworks worthy of Insomniac-scale production. Not many can resist Kaskade; his particular brand of energy and tracks laced with a combination of floaty female vocals and the popular crescendo of buildup, then drop, that keeps each of his festival sets a continuous crowd-pleaser.
Though, as a long-time fan of his, this being my second time seeing him play at the Shoreline, I would certainly not be averse to catching one of his 'Redux' sets in the future, as I've heard nothing but good things about a blissed-out set compiled of the dreamy older tunes that made me first fall in love with Ryan Raddon's music all those years ago ('It's You, It's Me,' anyone?).
Room For Improvement:
Maybe I'm a little jaded, but I've just never seen such a young and strangely aggressive crowd at a so-called rave. Personally, I'm of the opinion that more festival-goers (read: newcomers to the electronic music scene) need to realize that simply wearing the kandi bracelets made popular by the rapid growth of raves and electronic music festivals in the past couple years does not equate to living the 'PLUR' lifestyle, so-to-speak.
True to its origins in the '90s, PLUR is an attitude exhibited by people determined to spread peace, love, unity, respect and in general, good vibes, especially in a rave atmosphere. On the whole, it was something I found sorely lacking from the crowd at Beyond, especially on Day 1, with only a marginal improvement on Day 2.
Although I'm more than happy I was in attendance at my first Beyond Wonderland this year, it seemed clear to me that the event itself was aimed toward a much younger crowd, perhaps more so than in past years; though as a first-timer at a Beyond event, I had no other basis to judge that off of, other Insomniac events being excepted here.
However, from past experience, I've always seen and believed that the experience you have at any festival is just as much about the vibes you yourself send out, as the ones you receive. More often than not, the two are in direct correlation with each other. In other words, if you go determined to have a good time, you will; and my experience at this year's Beyond Wonderland Bay Area proved no different.

While you will see many of these artists from across the globe, Beyond Wonderland is really an exclusive show in Southern California. For us, this means a huge influx of international artists taking their talents to the Pacific Northwest. Outside of Beyond Wonderland events, that doesn‖t mean that they donʼt play music, but those that live in the Pacific Northwest are treated the same way other countries are. Magic Mike Live and Magic Mike Live TM.com are trademarks of The Magic: The Gathering TM Movie® and are licensed for non-commercial use only. To help you with that, Beyond Wonderland staff and staff will be posting their performance schedules ‒with their notes available ‒ during the weekend of Beyond Wonderland to help you plan, organize, and catch up with the performances going on at Beyond Wonderland, and what they are bringing to San Diego on weeknights.

As a result the Beyond Wonderland SF series will have three separate music events: The Beyond Wonderland Socal, the Beyond Wonderland Bay Area and the Beyond Wonderland Socal (and Beyond Wonderland SF) both focusing on the Bay Area, with the Beyond Wonderland SJ series focusing on San Juan. While many of these events are still happening on the same dates, there will be no single-event nights. Rather, the dates will be based on the release dates posted on the event pages in both San Juan and Beyond Worcester, and each event will feature more bands, bands who have different fans than the last. As it stands, Beyond Wonderland SF will feature: The band Big Boi, a new release from the Boston-based band The Offspring, to showcase their latest album and tour dates alongside the likes of The Vaccines, The Dismemberment Plan, Styx, Shabazz Palaces, Deadmau5 and many others, plus special guests including Giorgio Moroder, James Arthur and more.
Bassrush The Bassrush is one of the most prominent, and still the only, electronic act from Worcester, MA, while their home state, Massachusetts, was a bit more hard rockier. Since 2000 Bassrush has become one of the bigger acts in Worcester, with tours including numerous shows at both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the National Theatre, and numerous sold-out shows in their home state.
